Episode 09. Making Math Matter

Rod Berger
September 10, 2024

Dr. Rod Berger speaks with Dr. Trena Wilkerson, President of NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) and Professor of Mathematics Education at Baylor University about the beauty of math and how we can reinvent math teaching to bring the benefits to a new generation.

Dr. Wilkerson agrees math needs a rebrand and its teaching, a rethink. Exacerbated by COVID, the need for communication with students and support during the math process only increased. Technology helped to a point, yet fundamental issues remained, such as the need to embrace mistakes, enjoy the process, and make math fun again.

Changing the narrative is as important as the process, and helping students understand the answer isn't the only goal that can help improve the outcomes. Personalized learning within math isn't just about providing the right problems at the right time, it's about understanding the student at all times throughout their math journey.

From math equality to the removal of tracking. Dr. Berger and Dr. Wilkerson cover a wide range of subjects of tropical interest.
